I Believe there’s a Leader in All of Us

I believe there’s a leader in all of us. To me, a leader is someone who is completely true to themselves. They know exactly what their beliefs and dreams are and are willing to do anything to make them come true. Having leadership qualities can set an example for everybody else. When I think of someone with leadership skills, I think of Martin Luther King, Jr. He was one of the biggest and best leaders in our nation’s history. He was not afraid to go against what everyone else thought and stood up for what he believed in.  At the end of the day, a leader can be anyone who has a positive influence on someone else.

Responsibility is something that automatically comes with the role of a leader.  How leaders show that they are good leaders is through responsibility.  Leaders are responsible for their actions and will hold accountability for them.  Martin Luther King, Jr. was responsible for all of his actions, even when the majority of the country was against him.  He took care of those who followed him in the hardest of times.

Finally, I think a leader is someone who is independent. They are not a “follower” and are not easily influenced.  They are confident in who they are and what their beliefs and dreams are.

In my own experiences as being a leader, I found that it can be both an easy and difficult job.  I found that people will look up to you if you take charge and become that person who is determined and prepared to accomplish the main mission.

While working in the golf industry, there are many ways that I need to become a leader.  I found myself becoming a leader when my Head pro could not make it to a group golf lesson.  I was the one who had to make important decisions on my own to get this group session going.  As I was standing there, many thoughts ran through my head.  How am I going to get this done?  Am I doing this right?  How is this going?   I thought to myself, “I need to give these people a group golf lesson and I am going to do it”!  I finally gathered my thoughts on what I could teach this group and stepped up to begin my lesson.  I was calm, cool and collective. I was direct with the group, showing them that I was knowledgeable about what I was doing. After I was done giving this lesson, I got specific feedback from the students.  They were thankful that I was the one giving them there lesson.  They acknowledged that I did a good job and that they learned a lot from the lesson.

I am excited that I am going to become and Head Golf Pro at a golf club.  My future career demands me to become a highly effective leader that helps people become interested in something that I love and believe in.  I will be leading a successful business one day and it will depend on me to keep it running smoothly. People will be depending on me to help teach them the game of golf and help them become better players through instruction.

To me, leaders are very important people who work hard to accomplish their goals and set an example for everyone.  That is why I know anyone can become a leader.

I Believe He Who Says He Can and He Who Says He Can’t are Both Usually Right

Everyone knows what leadership is, but not everyone knows how to be a leader within yourself and show your vision.  Everyone has this idea that a leader needs to be a specific person, but what they do not know is that if you cannot even lead yourself how are you expected to lead a fortune 500 company. “The point is not to become a leader.  The point is to become yourself, and to use yourself completely – all your gifts, skills and energies – to make your vision manifest.  You must withhold nothing.  You must, in sum, become the person you started out to be, and to enjoy the process of becoming (Warren Bennis, On Becoming a Leader).”

Everyone has a vision of leadership my vision of leadership is not letting myself down and reaching my full potential.  I feel that is what a lot of people lack or do not feel is a part of leadership.  My vision is this idea of self-fulfillment, where you have to lead yourself find your values and work ethic, you have to believe in yourself.  Generally he who says he can and he who says he can’t are both usually right.  With this it is the idea of never to give up and to give it your all.  I will take what I have learned and apply it to every facet of my life.  Because I feel in life you are always in a situation to lead someone somewhere.  Being a good leader is not as easy as people think.  A good leader needs to motivate, guide, trust, and believe, I will take these aspects and apply it to myself and become the best possible leader I can be.  In being myself in the process of becoming a team leader is simply staying true to yourself and your values.  I feel this is the only way one can stay true to themselves as well as become a team leader.  Although you will need to possess some moral values to stay in check and not stray from being yourself.  I feel we are always constantly learning and changing, so I feel that you have to change your mind somewhat on leadership style.  I have changed my mind, in that I feel you must be true to yourself and always have this never giving up attitude.  If you can present this attitude, your followers will have more faith in you.  Being a leader is very hard you must fully commit to it and realize you cannot just go through the motions.

I Believe Everyone is Born to be a Leader

Everyone, no matter your position or status, in some way or another is a leader. However, some are better at making their leadership role visible to others and can lead by example. As Warren Bennis refers to in his quote, “leaders do not try to make themselves into leaders, leadership comes to them.” The more aggressively one tries to bring leadership upon them, the less successful they will be. I believe people are born to be leaders, not made into leaders.

My vision of a leader is someone, anybody can go to and will get the proper guidance. A leader is someone who will not get frustrated and someone I can go to with any concern. As Lord Montgomery states in a quote, “Leadership is the capacity and will to rally men and women to a common purpose, and the character which inspires confidence.” As a leader you are expected to show confidence and manifest your knowledge. They are expecting others to come to them with concerns and do not shy away from difficult situations, rather embrace them and act with integrity.

I feel leadership already has and will call upon me in the future. This skills and knowledge I have learned in my previous life experiences will assist me in becoming the best leader possible. However, to become the best leader I will continue to strive to better myself. There is no such point in which I can be content with the knowledge and skills I currently possess and be a leader. I will take the what I have learned to assist me in becoming a leader, but I will also use that to better myself at the same time.

“The point is to become yourself, and to use yourself completely.” This portion of the infamous quote refers to, as stated previously, you are born into becoming a leader, not made into a leader. This means, to be successful, I will have to be myself and not make myself into something I am not. I am who I am, and to be a success leader this is something I need to be concise of. As Bennis states, “become the person you started out to be, and enjoy the process of becoming.” Allowing life to come to me instead of making something happen that was not intended to happen will be key to becoming the best leader I can be. It is important to remember that a successful leader must stay patient, humble, and knowledgeable. Any deviation from these standards will take away from the creditability of a successful leader.

I Believe Leadership is In Everyone

“The point is not to become a leader.  The point is to become yourself, and to use yourself completely – all your gifts, skills and energies – to make your vision manifest.  You must withhold nothing.  You must, in sum, become the person you started out to be, and to enjoy the process of becoming.”  I believe that leadership is in everyone, everyone has the ability to show leadership skills. Not only do I believe that leadership is in everyone, I believe that leadership is one of the most important skills a person could have. My vision of leadership is someone who can be confident and instill that confidence in others. Leadership is something that people can display very well or it is incredibly hard for them to show. Leadership is bringing out the best in the people around you to make the most positive experience and learning for all involved.

Over the course of the semester I have learned even more about leadership and what it takes to be a successful leader. I will take the strategies and theories of leadership that we have learned and apply them to my life. Leadership is very important to me, in all situations it can be used. I have learned the approaches of good leadership and how to handle team situations to my best ability. Leadership is important in all situations; it can be used in my golf management work. It is important to make impacts and positive experiences for the people around me. This class has done many things to help make me a good leader.

Becoming a team leader shows you a lot about the person that you are and the qualities that you have. I am realizing the strengths and weaknesses that I have. Leadership is in me, I have had many leadership positions and believe that I have what it takes to be successful as a leader. It is important to realize your strengths and give yourself weaknesses to work on. This class has affirmed my thoughts that everyone is capable of leadership. Everyone has leadership in them, with the right training and practice it can be brought out. There are people who are better at displaying this leadership, but with practice I feel as though anyone can be a good leader. This class has taught me many things about leadership, but mostly how important it is to being successful.

I BELIEVE IN DOING MORE

My mind set in beginning this class was more of, “I can’t believe I am in stuck in summer school, rather than being home with my friends,” but the more this class went on the more I realized how beneficial it is going to be to me if I apply what I learned. I think a good leader is first and foremost a good servant. What I mean by that is he works hand in hand with this coworkers helping them and encouraging them with even the smallest detail. In doing this he will gain the respect of his peers as well as keep the workplace functioning at the highest level.

I have been put in to many leadership opportunities at numerous jobs and during school assignments such as presentations and group projects. Every new leadership opportunity that I get into I look as an learning experience to practice what I have already learned and what I can continue to improve on since I am looking to go into a form of a managerial role after graduation this next year. One thing that this class has taught me about leadership is that you are not always going to have the best people in your group and sometimes you are going to have to play the role as the “bad” guy in order to get the work done. I am not very confrontational but that is something that I am going to have to work on doing in a professional manner in order to the best out of people. I have been in enough groups where the leader is all on a power serge and he makes it all about him. I think one of the best qualities a leader can have is the knowledge of when he needs to direct and when he needs to stand back and let this coworkers be able to expand their input and knowledge on a project. Listening is so very important to be a good leader.

I feel that I am making good steps in becoming a leader but I believe that I can do more. Just like I learned in sports, it is a team game and leadership has the same concept. You need everyone’s input and everyone’s contribution to make the project successful. When one person comes up short the whole team does. One thing that I am going to take from this class and apply to my life is doing more. I want to be the servant leader who people can depend on but have the wisdom to make the hard decisions. I believe in doing more.

I Believe there are Good Leaders

Leadership in my eyes is being an influencer to people, and lead people in the right direction to accomplish a set goal.  I believe that having good leadership skills will be very beneficial throughout your life.  As a person if you can be a leader you will be respected, this is saying that it is very important to learn good leadership skills and become a leader.

Throughout this course I have learned many different skills for becoming a good leader.  The most beneficial was learning the basics when dealing with people.  I think that talking to people in the right manner really helps you to become a good a leader.  I will take these communication skills that I learned and use them throughout my career.

I am becoming myself as I work towards becoming a good leader.  When becoming a good leader you need to know other people.  As a good leader thought it is very important to find yourself.  As a good leader you have to know how you want to be treated.  As a good leader you have to know yourself and find out how you would want to be talked to.  Sometimes though people will not respond to your leadership skills well.  Everybody in this world has different ways they work, but as a good leader you have to learn to be motivator and change your ways.

I have changed my mind since taking this class and learning what it takes to become a good leader.  I said, earlier that you need to be a motivator when becoming a good leader. I think I learned many different ways to be a motivator.  I also think a good thing I learned was how to communicate.  Communication is vey important and I saw that people respond different when you communicate to them in different ways.  I also learned when becoming a good leader you need to know how to change.  I learned that every day can be different and every person is different.  I learned if you have the ability to change you would be a successful leader.

Leadership skills are a very beneficial thing to have throughout your life. Leadership skills are important to have in the workplace, and in your daily life at home.  Everyday you need to communicate with people to accomplish a goal; it is up to you if you want to be the leader or the follower.
